As the reader in you grows and becomes more able, one important skill to develop is the ability to compare and contrast characters, plots, settings, problems, etc. Being able to discern (that means 'figure out') similarities and differences helps you understand both stories better and helps you to more deeply appreciate them.
For example, let's compare and contrast Jess's farm to Garland Farm. First, the comparisons (similarities).
Jess's farm is small. Some might not even call it a farm. It is really nothing more than an old, run down farm house, a shed that housed Miss Bessie, a small vegetable garden, some fields and woods. It was home to a poor family who wished they had more money.
Garland Farm was also run down. And technically speaking it too was a poor family's home. But I think that is where the similarities end (if you can think of additional similarities, please add them in your comment!).
Now let's contrast (find differences).
Where as Jess's farm had always been a home to his family, Garland Farm had once been home to a commune. So many families had once lived at Garland Farm that, at its largest, it might have been considered a very small town. It was certainly an entire community.
Where as Jess's farm was run down because his family had trouble earning enough money to keep it up, Garland Farm was run down because Rain and Cap chose to have and spend as little money as possible. They believed money was the root of all evil. They wanted to keep their lives free from money to the greatest extent possible. Garland's run down condition was Rain and Cap's choice. That's a big difference! What do you think Jess's mom and dad would have said to Rain when they learned of that choice? Could they be more different?
Where as Jess's farm was one of the places he wanted to escape FROM, and therefore became one of the factors that led to the creation of Terabithia, Garland Farm is the place Cap wants to escape TO (for most of the story). C Average Middle School was so unlike Garland Cap felt disoriented. He saw Garland as the place that would save him, the place that would bring sanity back to his life.
Do you see how thinking and writing about the similarities and differences of just the farms in these two books can really help you gain a deeper understanding of the characters and stories. If you answered 'no', go back and reread this post. Seriously. Do it. You have plenty of time. You can compare and contrast almost anything. Let's think of Bridge to Terabithia and Schooled again. With these to stories you could compare and contrast another setting like Lark Creek Elementary and C Average Middle School. You might compare and contrast characters, like Jess and Cap, Leslie and Rain, Zach and Janice Avery. Or, you could even compare and contrast parts of the plot, like the endings.
Discussion Points:
a. Think about both books.
b. Find one part of each to compare and contrast.
c. In your comment, list at least one comparison (similarity) and one contrast (difference).
d. Then, later, go to others' comments, read them, and reply with one additional comparison or contrast.
e. That means you're writing at least twice on this one Let's Talk post.
Let's write!

I want to compare and contrast Leslie's parent, Bill and Judy, to Mrs. Donnelly.
ReplyDeleteFirst, the comparisons. Neither Judy and Bill nor Mrs. Donnelly were related to the protagonists, Jess and Cap. Both Judy and Bill, and Mrs. Donnelly were very different from the protagonists' actual parents, Jess's mom and dad and Rain. Both had a great deal of respect for the protagonist. Judy and Bill for Jess for being Leslie's only friend. And Mrs. Donnelly for Cap for being such a kind-hearted, warm, honest and loving person. By the end of each story both Jess and Cap wanted to be at Bill and Judy's and Mrs. Donnelly's houses more and more. They came to enjoy their time in those homes.
Next, the contrasts, or differences. Jess looked up to, wondered in awe about, and was a bit intimidated by Bill and Judy. They were smarter than his parents, richer than his parents and treated Leslie very different than his parents treated him. Cap was at first confused by, then later respected, Mrs. Donnelly. But he was never intimidated by her (her daughter, maybe!) and he never looked up to her.
Mr.G,
DeleteI totally agree with you and that last part was hilarious. I also have something to compare where cap lives they are a little poor and so is Jess's family.
$~Jordan~$
Mr.G,
DeleteI think that Cap was definitely I'm imitated by Sophie.
Mr G
DeleteWhy in almost every story we read there is a death of someone thinks that someone else is dead. For once I want to read a story that is very happy and no one dies.
-Dyamond
I will compare and contrast when Leslie dies to when the kids at Claverage think Cap is dead. When Leslie dies they have a memorial service at Leslie's house and Jess has a parade in Terabithia. When they think cap is dead they have a thing for Cap with candles and music.
ReplyDeleteIn contrast when they think Cap is dead some of the students spoke about how he changed their lives. At Leslie's service the people said that they were sorry for Leslie's parent's and Jess's loss. At Caps thing there was 1,100 kids there. At Leslie's there was way less. Now for the big one Cap wasn't dead!
Brady
Brady,
DeleteI was going to right about the same topic that you wrote about. Two great hockey minds think alike. I also loved how you describe Cap's wake as a "thing". You might of forgot the name but still it was pretty hilarious. You could have also wrote about how a hippy can memorize 1,100 in two months amazing!!!!!
WILL
I found that both Jess and Cap are insecure and have a hard time fitting in with the rest of the kids in the school and have a really hard time making friends lie jess was only "the kid who draws a lot" and cap was the "the new hippy kid who was the human target of spitballs" but both of them where a lot more then that.
ReplyDeleteOlivia
Another contrast is that Jess had to "find himself". That is where Leslie came in. While Cap made people think abou themseles. Cap already knew who he was but learned that other people wern't as bad as Rain claimed.
DeleteBrady
Olivia
DeleteI think your comment is awesome I like how you used quotes from the book!
Olivia,
DeleteI completely agree with you. They shouldn't have been insecure they should have just been themselves. I think it's better to be yourself than someone who you aren't, because then people like you for who you aren't .
~HANNAH
I am going to write about the difference how Jess' dad didn't really get along with Jess but Caps grandmother got along with Cap really well.
DeleteNINA:):D
Olivia,
DeleteI agree with you about Jess and Cap booth not fitting in with the kids around them at there schools , and how they were both more then people think they are. But a diffrents is also that Cap wasn't afraid to be him self and Jess was.
Fiona
In Schooled and B.T.T there were two wise people, can you guess who? If you guessed Rain and Leslie your correct. They're alike because they went along with you know what if. They're also alike because the finally met there match with trees. Leslie died from swinging on a rope that broke over a rushing river, the rope was tied to a TREE!! In Schooled Rain fell out of a TREE and broke her hip. They are different because Leslie died and Rain only got severely injured.
ReplyDeleteWILL
Will
DeleteI agree with you but you could also add that they both liked the outdoors and they both had some sort of relation ship with the main character.
Cat :)
I never would have thought of that but seance you said that I also realized that in the in scooled it starts with rain falling out of a tree and cap had to go to school. And in brige to tearabithea they start with the rope swing and building and they also made the end of the story's better. What goes around comes around.
DeleteTYLER
Will that is a great comparison I completely agree with you but one thing you could have added is that Rain and Leslie where both a big part in both of the main characters and Jess lost that person that was really importint to them and Cap only had to live without Rain for a couple of weeks.
DeleteOlivia
A contrast for that post is that Leslie was the one that changed Jess. On the other hand is that Rain changed to make the world better for cap. I like your point about the tree. You would never think that a tree could be a big game changer. The endings are big surprises but make a big difference in the protagonist's life. Having your best friend die. Or in Cap's case having your grandmother change her philosophy. Think about that your grandmother who hated "The money hungry rat race of modern society" become part of "The rat race".
DeleteBrady
Will
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome comparison and for a difference in Schooled Rain falls out of the tree in the beginning and in Bridge to Teribithia Leslie dies from the rope breaking at the end.
NINA:):D
Mr.G
ReplyDeleteAnother thing is that Jess lost his best friend and the people in the school THOUGHT they lost there best friend. Another thing is that Leslie was happy with who she was and rain was too.
~HANNAH
In schooled and in bridge to terabitha they both lived in old run down places like The old Perkins place and garland. But Jess mom and dad need money and they are fighting over money but cap and rain don't need and they don't want money they are agenst that. I wonder if they would get along they both believe in different things so maybe.
ReplyDelete~Dyamond
There are a lot of contrasts in these two books. One was that Cap didn't really have any best friends. Hugh kind of was one but stabbed Cap in the back. I mean cap had a girlfriend but he didn't have a best friend. Jess on the other hand had a best friend (enter Leslie) but not a girlfriend. Two was that kids didn't like Jess till the end of the book where as Cap was liked in the middle and through the end. They also lived both lived on a farm but Jess had a farm with animals. Cap had a farm with vegetables.
ReplyDeleteNash
I have a comparison Leslie had a relationship with Jess and Shophie had a little crush on Cap. Also Cap helped Shophie with her drivers test and Jess helped Leslie make a fort for them. Now I have something to say about Jess him and Leslie were friends for a month or so and she just died. I think it had something to do with what Jess's sister told her.
ReplyDelete$~Jordan ~$
There are a lot of thing that are alike in these story's that I am just thinking of now. Like how in the beginning of each of the story they have no friends. But Jess is being shy when cap is just being him self and did not Chang. At the end they each have a friend. Jess Chang him self but cap was the same the whole story he Chang other people not him. And rain and lesslly like will said each met with a tree and they each had a big emaganaion. And would always be them selfs. There are a lot more but I can't write them right now.
ReplyDeleteT:)Y:)L:)E:)R
A similarity to both books is that both of the characters are going to a new school and when they get there they are considered awkward or weird. Something different is that cap starts out with one friend and at the end everyone is his friend and Leslie starts with one friend and ends only with the same one.
ReplyDeleteAnother similarity is that cap is not afraid to do tai che on the front lawn and Leslie is not afraid to run with the boys. Another similarity is that Sophie starts out hating cap and ends liking him but with Jess at the end he and his dad bond
SARAH:)
A similarity to Rain and Bill and Judy is that they both wanted to get away from money. While Jess wanted money.
ReplyDeleteBrady
Mr. G,
ReplyDeleteI'd like to compare and contrast about Jess and his family wanting money and Cap and Rain hiding from and not wanting money. The thing about Jess and his family is that they live on a farm, with a beat house and Jess hates it. He wishes that they had money to move out of the poor area they live in a rich area. Cap and Rain live at garland and chose to not have money. They are the opposite, they want to be poor. They wanted to escape from money.

Mr.G
ReplyDeleteA simalarety is between Leslie and rain they are both out going people . They are also different from other people Rain is a hippie , Leslie goes scuba diving as a hobby when other people in the run down town don't even have clean water to do that in . A differents is Cap and Jess cap isn't afraid to be him self and Jess is.
Fiona
Mr. G I think schooled is more realistic. Janice And Zach are the same. Janice bullies little kids and Zach bullied cap. It is different because Janice bullies little kids and Zach bullied cap at his age.
ReplyDeleteDillon
There are alot of them and everyone has said almost all of them but no one has said that cap knew what a TV was but he had never watched it before rain fell out of the tree and Jess watches TV all the time (when his sisters are not watching) and they both don't have alot of money I know this because jesses mom can't afford to by him new shoes and cap barley even has shoes plus cap and rain only goes to the store when they really really need stuff.
ReplyDelete~Dyamond
In both the stories the main characters have two houses sort of. Like in bridge to terabithia Jess has his house and teribithia. And in schooled cap has the outside world and garland. But a difference is that cap lives with someone else outside of garland and Jess sort of just hangs out in teribithia.
ReplyDeleteDillon
A similarity between C Average Middle School and Lark Creek Elementary is that someone in the school or the whole school changes. At first everybody doesn't like Cap. But when Cap leaves they wish that he was there. Like when Liese dies 2 people are sad at the school. The people that are sad are Jess and his teacher. A difference is when the whole school is sad when Cap leaves but when Liese dies only 2 people are sad at the school.
ReplyDelete-Amelia
Jess never really had friends and neather did cap at The begining but then jess met lezlie and cap became popular and got everyone to like him for who he was. And jess never really had any one else but lezlie that really got who he was.
ReplyDelete~Dyamond
I have the comparison of Jess and Sophie, Jess at first wasn't to sure about having a "girl friend" at first but during the story their friendship grew and ended up best friends. Sophie didn't like cap during the story but, after she found out that he (Cap) got her the bangle she saw that Cap might be weird but he's trying to be as nice as possible. DANIELLE !!!
ReplyDeleteI have a comparison about Naomi and May Belle. they both had a relationship with the main character and they were both girls the difference is that May Belle is Jess's sister and Naomi is Caps girlfriend
ReplyDeleteCat :)
Another similarity between Schooled and Bridge of Terabithia is that the main characters both had enemies but in different ways. Jess knew his enemy, Janice, was bullying him. Janice Avery, an 8th grader, physically bullied all the younger 5th graders.
ReplyDeleteCap, on the other hand, didn't know that Zach Powers was trying to ruin his life. Zach Powers secretly signed Cap up to be class president. Then Zach and all the other kids to torture him while he was president. They made him do foolish and unnecessary things, like memorize 1100 names.
jonathan
i just finished big nate and it was great. i rated it a 9 and i would recomend that book to anyone. it is about nate and he hates a girl named gina. he gets paired up with him on a project. gina always wants a+ on her stuff. she does the project wrong and nate has comics and they get a good grade. gina gets really mad.
ReplyDeletedillon
i am reding middle school sequel and it is the best. it is pretty much the same as the first book. it is operation get a life. rafe moves to his gradmas house. he try to figure out about his dad by a family member named hairy.
ReplyDelete`dillon
I'm reading a book called "The Roar". It's about a boy named Mika who lives in England behind a wall. This wall keeps him safe from the animal plague. It is based in the future after a terrible animal plague destroyed much of the world 43 years before Mika was born.
ReplyDeleteMika has been paranoid about people hurting him ever since his twin sister Ellie vanished 8 years ago.
There’s an organization called fit for life. It is supposed to help the children grow and live long lives since they are the first children born in 43 years. He suspects that they are not who they claim to be. His suspicion is that they are really trying to poison him.
